Proposed Witchcraft Suppression Bill

Mpumalanga are in the process of drafting a Witchcraft suppression bill which will make the pratcice or admission of witchcraft a criminal act in Mpumalanga - you might think it is not your province and therefore not your problem, but if Mpumalanga do it, they open the doorway for other provinces to do it.

What you can do to help: The deadline for objections is 13 July so please do not delay. We need all pagans who identify as Witches (or even those who don't) to lodge objections against the bill.

Together with the South African Pagan Council (SAPC), Sapra has launched a national call for all South African Pagans who self-identify as Witches to register as interested and affected parties and to lodge objections against the Bill.

To register as an I&AP contact: Advocate Bongani Bongo (013) 766 6584 (Nelspruit, Mpumalanga) bbongo@mpg.gov.za

For more information contact The South African Pagan Rights Alliance.

You can use the following template to submit your objection.

Office of the Premier
Mpumalanga Provincial Government

For attention: Advocates B. Thomas and H.M. Mbatha and L. Pretorius

With reference to: P.15/5/15 Comment as an Interested and Affected Party: Mpumalanga Witchcraft Suppression Bill 2007.

I, INSERT NAME HERE, hereby formally object to the proposed Witchcraft Suppression Bill on the following grounds:

1. Any bill that provides for the suppression of Witchcraft is in direct contravention with the South African Constitution and Bill of rights (which allow religious freedom to all)

2. The proposed bill will criminalize members of a recognized and established religious minority

3. It denies the members of this minority religious community freedom of religion and belief

4. The bill will create a threat to the dignity, and well being and safety of Witch/Wiccan religious communities throughout South Africa

5. The bill will misrepresent a Witches worldview and belief system and will create discrimination and division within communities

I respectfully request that this bill is not passed with the current wording - and that alternate solutions are found to deal with the issues at hand.

Regards

Good news.

Luke Martin (South African Pagan Council) has confirmed that the Mpumalanga Legislature will not proceed with their Witchcraft Suppression Bill. He met with the Provincial Executive Council last week and this was conveyed to him verbally.

And, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development has agreed to review and reform the national Witchcraft Suppression Act. This was confirmed to me by a senior member of the Department's Legal Services on Wednesday 15 August. I trust this means the Act will be found to be unconstitutional and withdrawn.

I am waiting for written confirmation from this Department.

Thank you to everyone who supported the petition against this Bill. Luke will forward all signatories to the Minister's Office in motivation in due course, so please, don't stop signing the petition - if you have not yet signed it that is.

I think that this bill of suppresion is a lot of bull we should all come out of the "broom" closet" so to speak and defend our constitutional right as south africans for freedom of religion

If South Africa will turn against Pagans, we will have a very hard and long road ahead. We will maybe turned out in ashes as the Pagans/Wiccans a few years ago. We do have a right and we can fight, I will even give my life so that The Old Religion can live forward. So Mote It Be!

People, we as the Pagans of South Africa must stand together and fight for our beliefs. Since this is the year 2007 and we are no longer in the dark ages EVERONE must be granted by law to have religion freedom. This is a free country and we have personal right to practice whatever religion we have. We as the citizens of South Africa have right to religion freedom and that includes us- The Witches. So stand together and let no one interrupt our faith and beliefs and say no to the replacment of the dark age laws and let this belief grow in South Africa and the world. Lt no one get us under.

In short for thos who have not read the draft or fins it a bit long winded what the draft proposes to do is to deal with people murdering 'witches' by making witchcraft illegal .
