Grounding is the practice of dispelling excess energy after ritual or spellcrafting or unwanted feelings such as anger, for example. A good technique is to sit on the floor close your eyes and steady your breathing; a light meditation. Imagine all the excess energy or negative feelings pooling in the pit of your stomach - let them sit there for a short time and then allow the energy to move into the earth, either through your hand, butt or you can visualise a cord running from your spine into the earth and dispell them through that.
You will, with practice be able to feel those feelings or energy draining away to be recycled by the earth. You can also draw energy this way, or practice being connected to the earth, Divine, Universal Energy or whatever your beliefs are.
A simpler method is to have salt in a bowl. If you feel the need to ground, relax - take a pinch of salt and rub it between your fingers imagining all unwanted unneeded energies disperse with the salt. Representing the element Earth, salt tends to be ideal for this. Another easy method is to have a shower and visualize all the negative energy flowing down the drain along with the water.

"Both Grounding and Shielding are about dispersal of unwanted energy. This may come at a time when it is expected, as in closing a ritual, or it may come when unexpected in the form of outside interference or an attack.
As I'm an electrician, many of my visuals tend to be electrical in nature (as evidenced in the Grounding thread), and shielding is no different. Often, various devices need to communicate electronically. This is generally done on a pair of wires at a low voltage. Problems arise when these wires must run near other wires that are at a high voltage. The high voltage wires can induce electronic "noise" on the low voltage lines. To ensure proper communications, the low voltage lines are shrouded in a conductive mesh jacket. This jacket is known as the "Shield". Guess where you land the shield. Yep. You tie one end of the shield to Ground, where the noise is harmlessly dispersed.
The parallels to energy work are many. Think of your connection to the Divine as the communications wires. This is the objective of your energy work. The high voltage lines are all those things that distract from your objective, be they physical or otherwise. The Shield, you visualize. Anything that is distracting, either gets diverted, or shunted to your Grounding point.
But what about an outright attack? Similar answers. Think in terms of a lightning bolt. You've a barn that needs protecting so you erect a lightning rod. But the lightning rod doesn't absorb the energy of the attack. It is tied, directly to the earth, via a large grounding wire. The energy of the lightning bolt hits the rod, travels along the wire into the ground where it is absorbed. It never even touches your barn.
Energy drains? Electrical again. You have an internal "battery" that you keep charged by your connection to the Divine. You draw as you need it from this battery. But when some one or thing comes along trying to take energy from your battery, flip a switch. Now the drain is connected by a big fat shunt that draws directly from the Divine Source, bypassing your battery completely. Your reserves stay protected and there is no limit to what the intruder is tapped into. They will soon either give up or burn out. But that's their problem.
Do you see a common thread here? All of these situations involve a connection to the Divine Source. Shielding and Grounding techniques are simply visualizations we can use to ensure a proper relationship. Attempting to block or absorb outside energies with our own energy will soon result in self burn out. But the Divine Source is limitless. By Shielding and Grounding in the Divine, we not only stay connected, but stay protected as well.
And, of course, if you're not unfortunate enough to be an electrician, you'll have to work out your own visualizations. But that's part of what this Spirituality is all about anyway; discovery of our own unique connection to the Divine."
