Hmm intresting topic,
Although I am still looking for my spiritual guide, I know a pagan couple who has a squirrel (the man) and a dragon (the woman) as guides (spiritual). They found them through guidlines by their mentor and meditation (will get more info). I think it more what you connect to on a specific energy level, than anything else. Quite intresting though, it seems there is no restrictionsbetween spirtual / physical guides and famliares.

Nemesis, I am of the conviction that Spirit Guides (animal or otherwise) are not the same as Familiars. Their roles may be fairly the same, but I see a distinction. The first is there to assist you in learning your life lessons, whereas the latter are there to assist you in LIFE itself. Guides lead you. Familiars follow you.
Ladyhawk, on the subject of "demons" - I recently watched the Golden Compass and wondered about the use of the word 'daemon'. As it turns out, one of the first definitions is that of the evil spirit... but in the same description they explain that it is a "nearby spirit". The definition basically comes down to a spirit that comes closer and assists in tasks or something, when called for. In IT you also have a "Mailer Daemon" which is a process / program that sits idly in the background until something triggers it. Something like mail that could not be delivered or a virus that tried to piggy-back on a mail or something. THAT was the most important part for me because 'demon' was eventually derived as the evil entity, but it started out as just something that is there for YOUR USE.
...and to link in with another post elsewhere: who do we have to thank for making 'demon' a dirty word? CHRISTIANITY.
