Is this a bit of a long stretch?
I've been thinking of this idea for a while now, but have not yet had the initiative or support to put it into action:

I'm a Wits student, and at Wits, there are Christian societies, Hindu societies, Muslim societies, Jewish societies (SAUJS), etc. etc.  Would it be worthwhile to try to start a Pagan society? I personally would love to network and meet other Pagans in JHB, but it seems difficult, especially with so many people in the broom closet!

Anyway, tell me what you all think of my idea!

Blessed be,
Ametista

Re: Is this a bit of a long stretch?
Hi

It is great to be able to talk to like minded people and have their ideas and support when you need a bit of reasurance.  With Mawu I have that I and it has been a blessing.

The only problem about a pagan society is other people that would judge you for your relegion.  There is still a lot of stigmata out there when it come to paganism (even though it is legal).

The best way to start something like this however is to get an anonomous email address and put an advert on the notice board that people should email you if they are interested.  That way you can get a general feeling of the people's reactions without being typecast.

If things go well with the emails who knows what could happen?

Hope this helps

Thanks, that's a great idea! That way, if people e-mail death threats or anything like that, I'll just know not to go public with it.  I think it's so sad though, that after all these years, there's still so much discrimination and prejudice, and we have to worry about things like this.

Re: Is this a bit of a long stretch?

Hopefully soon people will learn to be more tolerant towards other and not judge them for colour, religion, or style but until then we have to play it safe.

I even have family members that I will never ever tell that I am a wiccan, I just know they will try to take away my children and send a priest over to safe my soul.  It will probably not end there and it will cause a huge rift in our family.  Though there is some members that suspect ;that do not ask just in case they do not get the answer they wanted (that their suspecions are correct).

These are people I know and trust just; think what a problem it can cause if some kind of christian community decided that you are possed by the devil.  Some people will never change for they have been raised in fear and  brainwashed (if you don't do things the way we told you to your soul will suffer forever)

Lets take is slow with these people and know that some will never be open minded and help those that ask.

Re: Is this a bit of a long stretch?

There are actually tons of Pagan meetups every month, particularly in Gauteng - a student society is a nice idea, if there are other Pagans about who want to attend -
