Hi, I'm new to this website and i think I've found it just in time! I love it, thank you!! My seven year old daughter attends a Waldorf School which has no religious system, unlike the gvt schools where the children are forced to pray everyday. We recently had a parent's meeting where her teacher (who is Christian) said that it's important for children to know religeon and attend church. Although a wiccan, I've always believed that it's important for my daughter to decide, when she's older, what she would like to believe in and find her own spiritual path without any undue influence and brain washing. My concern now is that if I don't explain my belief system to her now, she will be influenced by her teacher in this regard - something I definitely don't want right now. I and other parents are totally against this and we've told the teacher, but children of this age are easily influenced especially by those they trust and we don't always know what goes on in the classroom. Should I introduce her to a taste of paganism. She was active in our last handfasting ceremony and her brother's baby naming ceremony, but i don't want to be guilty of brainwashing - this is exactly what i;ve tried to avoid. Does anyone have any advice or input as to what I should do? I would really appreciate it! |

Hi Jacqui,
I know the feelings you are having right now, both our children are in a school which is also supposedly not a christian school, however, during music classes christian songs are taught for example. We are however as is evident by this website, very open about our religion more so than most pagans/Wiccans so our children are well aware of the difference, they attend full moon with us when we go, and sometimes complain that we don’t go often enough, at the same time they talk about how jesus loves them etc.
So basically we allow them to follow there own heart but make sure that they know what the options are, yes young children a re influenced easily, but they also change their minds very quickly so I’m not too worried about the decisions they make right now. However when a teacher blatantly tries to teach her personal religion to children in her care without the parents permission, it is important to make her understand that it is not what you want, it can be difficult because doing so requires you to “come out of the broom closet” not only for yourself but for your daughter too.
The other option is to discuss it with your daughter and explain to her that people have different believes and that yours for example is different to her teachers, and that both are right in their own way, but that not everyone’s believes are right for everyone else. "Life's journey is not to arrive at the end safely in a well preserved body, but rather to slide in sideways totally worn out shouting, "holy sh*t...what a ride!" |
