Citrine

Many people have come to know and love this stone under the name golden topaz,
or Madeira or Spanish topaz, although in actual fact it has very little in
common with the higher-quality gemstone topaz except for a few colour. Citrine
is a member of the large quartz family.

The name is derived from the colour - the yellow of the lemon - , although the
most sought-after stones have a clear, radiant yellowish to brownish red. Like
all crystal quartzes, the citrine has a hardness of 7 and is to a large extent,
insensitive to scratches. Citrines have that mellow, warm tone that seems to
have captured the last glow of autumn.

Tibetan Astrological Diagram with Magic Square

This black thangka depicts the Tibetan astrological diagram which Bodhisattva Manjushri is said to have inscribed on the under-shell of the tortoise.
In the inner circle of the square are Tibetan numerals one to nine arranged into a 'magic square' known as the nine mewas, with the number five at the centre and the other eight numbers arranged around it so that their digits add up to fifteen-horizontally, vertically, and diagonally. In the second rectangle are twelve animals, representing twelve year-cycle, derived originally from the Chinese system of the twelve terrestrial branches The Tibetan twelve-year cycle commences with the hare in east (left). This is because the Tibetan began their cycle in 1027 A.D., with the establishment of the Kalachakra cycle; this was already three years into the containing Chinese cycle which recommenced its sixty year cycle in the year 1024. Moreover, while the Chinese favored a north-south axial alignment, the Tibetans followed the traditional Indian model with an east-west axis of orientation.

Vertiver

The name comes from Tamil. In western and northern India, it is popularly known as khus, giving the earlier English names cuscus, cuss cuss, kuss-kuss grass, etc. Vetiver can grow up to 1.5 meters high and form clumps as wide. The stems are tall and the leaves are long, thin, and rather rigid; the flowers are brownish purple. Unlike most grasses, which form horizontally spreading mat-like root systems, vetiver's roots grow downward, 2–4 meters in depth. Vetiver is closely related to other fragrant grasses such as Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon citratus), citronella (Cymbopogon nardus, C. winterianus), and Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii). Though it originates in India, vetiver is widely cultivated in the tropical regions of the world. The world's major producers include Haiti, India, Java, and Réunion. In Malayalam the root is known as ramaccham.

The plant supposedly belonged to the Satyrs, who loved sex, drink and loud parties. The god Pan was a satyr. There's not much else in mythology or modern magic about this herb that I can find, other than you can carry it, eat it, burn it, or wear it for intellect, creativity, and to maintain the good life.

St.Johns worts

St. John's Wort is bound to Sun and Fire. It has a long history in folklore, and for centuries it was thought that burning it would drive off evil spirits and demons. With the advent of Christianity, it was associated with St. John the Baptist, and was said to start blooming on his birthday, June 24. On the day of his beheading (in August), the plant was believed to bleed red oil from its leaf glands. It is to this day believed to be at it's most potent when harvested in mid-summer, likely due to the timing of the birthday and death of St. John the Baptist. The genus name Hypericaceae means "above an icon" in Greek, and sprigs of the plant were used on images and statuary by the ancients to drive off evil spirits.

By: Victoria Anisman-Reiner, B.S.c

Walk into almost any store and you can find aromatherapy candles, scented spa treatments, fragrant potpourri, and scented oils touted to do everything from soften skin to improve your mood. The long tradition of using plants and herbs as medicine and in ritual lends a sense of wonder and some credibility to these claims in pagan circles. But is this stuff on the level? Is there any science behind it? Bottom line, does it really work? The answer, as one might expect, is not so simple.

Fennel is an important magickal herb that has been used for centuries. It can be used internally as a tea, or sprigs can be carried on the person in sachets or charms for clairvoyance, longevity, fertility, healing, love, purification, and strength. It is also used in this manner to prevent negativity and provide protection from harmful spells.

People learn Reiki for many reasons and come from an amazing variety of backgrounds, all attending for their own personal reasons. Reiki courses in the UK present a whole variety of approaches, some “traditional” Western-style, some more Japanese in content, some wildly different and almost unrecognisable, some free and intuitive, others dogmatic and based on rules about what you should always do and not do. Reiki is taught in so many ways, and students will tend to imagine that the way that they were taught is the way that Reiki is taught and practised by most other Reiki people.

Eucalyptus is bound to the Moon and Water. It is used magically for protection, purification, and health. Use leaves stuffed in sachets, pillows, and charms and carry or put in your bed to maintain good health, or anoint a sachet with Eucalyptus oil. Place leaves in a mesh bag and hang under the faucet for purification rituals. Place leaves around the house for health and protection from illness and unwanted energies. Ring a blue or green candle with leaves or flowers for healing energies. Cut a branch off a Eucalyptus tree and hang in a sickroom for the healing energy.

The Home Study approach to Reiki training

According to Mikao Usui’s surviving students, when you trained with Usui Sensei you did not follow a day course, or a two-day course, or a three-day course, in the way that Reiki is taught in the West. Training in Usui’s system was an ongoing process and would have been spread out over a considerable period. Usui would visit you and give you some energy work to carry out and then you would not see him for a while. You would do the prescribed work, keep notes on your experiences and then when you visited Usui, or when he visited you, you would review your progress. You would be given additional work to carry out, and again this was reviewed some time later.

A Crystal Healing Kit

A basic healing kit consists of one tumbled stone or cabochon for each chakra, plus two clear quartz crystals, one piece of calcite and two black stones such as hematite or black tourmaline. The stones I will talk about here are easy to find and will serve you well. They are the stones I generally recommend for the color meditation which will be added later. However, if you cannot find one of the stones in this section, substitute it with another stone from the list below each chakra. I have tried to include only stones which are readily available in most crystal stores. The specific metaphysical and healing properties of these stones can be found in either volume 1 or 2 of The Crystal Workbook.

Cornflower petals also make a wonderful mystical blue-colored handmade ink - which certainly has more magickal properties than store-bought for use in hand-worked spell books, etc. To make an ink out of the flowers, pick enough to fill a coffee cup, packed moderately. Using a non-metal container, boil 2 cups of water and drop the flowers in. Boil until the water becomes a beautiful blue and has evaporated down to about enough to fill a small jar, such as a baby food jar - do pick a jar that comes with a tight-fitting lid, of course. Using a strainer, strain the liquid into the jar. Add 2-3 drops of vinegar to hold the color, and a pinch of salt to prevent mold over extended periods. Shake lightly and keep in a dark area. Use an old-fashioned quill pen or calligraphy pen at any point thereafter for making your entries.

But there are aspects of the energy that are not being explained through this use of words, and in this article I want to talk about the essence of Reiki energy. In doing this we will touch on Taoism, QiGong, Shintoism, meditation, breathing, chanting and the use of the Reiki symbols.

But it's more than that. A crystal is one of the many bounties of the Earth's crust. They are a powerful tool and correspond directly to the element of Earth, but also the Air, Fire and Water.

Of course, for purifying and relaxation spells, Bee Balm is top notch when leaves and flowers are tied in a cloth and placed under hot running bathwater, and as such, this is considered a good addition to spells or rituals concerning peace, happiness, contentment, restfulness, and ridding oneself of negative energies or hexes.

Many of you will be familiar with Feng Shui, the Oriental art of placement, where you arrange your living environment to allow smooth flow of chi through your home, eliminating areas where chi will stagnate, and slowing down the speed of fast-rushing chi. So what has that to do with Reiki? Well they both deal with chi, but what I am really thinking of is applying the basic principles of Feng Shui to our practice of Reiki. This may seem a little strange, but please bear with me…

Well that is what I hope to describe in this article, and I also want to talk a little bit about ‘removing the barriers’ when you treat someone, going freestyle; I will outline some of the things that are possible when you simply suspend your disbelief, and try things out to see what’s possible.

If you have come across the word ‘kaizen’ before it will probably have been in the context of industrial quality control or personal development. Kaizen is a Japanese word that is usually translated as ‘improvement’, but it means more than that. The word has connotations of continuous, gradual, orderly and never-ending improvement, the willingness to constantly, relentlessly pursue improvement a small step at a time. The application of the kaizen principle is the reason why Japan’s economy was transformed after tSecond World War.

Crystal Healing is by no-means a new phenomenon. What is new is the increasing number of people who are drawn to look at alternatives to “western” or “traditional” medicines. If you are one of those people, then I congratulate you. Welcome to the Journey! I hope this guide will introduce you to a few crystals that you can try. I have also included some links to excellent reference books you may want to look at adding to your library.

A Simple Way with Symbols

In the West we like to make things complicated, and you can read about the complicated way that we have ended up using the Reiki symbols in my article ‘Simplicity and Sandwiches’ which was published in our February 2002 Newsletter and which can be found on our web site. The way that most of us now use symbols is a world away from the simple approach that Usui used. So how can we work with symbols in a way that echoes more the way that Usui taught his students?

The hearth and home are often safe, sacred spaces in pagan traditions. The home can be a private retreat, a place to recharge, and a blessed spot to gather. A house can be just a shelter, but the concept of "home" implies nourishment, abundance, strength, community, and more. Energizing and tending to one's home can enrich daily life and lay a foundation from which greater magickal workings can flow.

The Importance of Intent

A wise friend of mine once said to me that "where thought goes, energy flows" and I think that this principle applies very well to Reiki. Some of us have been taught in quite a rigid way, learning that we must always follow a particular prescription to achieve a desired effect, whether this be a set form of words, a collection of symbols, or a complicated ritual. That's fine: we can choose to do that if we like, but I believe that underlying our form of words, our rituals and our symbols is an important and powerful driving force: our intention. I believe that we can move beyond the details, the constructed systems, to access that simple, profound and powerful controlling force. Whatever we do, when we do Reiki, we control the energy using our intention.

Faeries are, of course, intricately tied to the natural world, and therefore, to plants. In fact, in some cases it is quite impossible to sort out just what is Faerie and what is plant! However, like much of Faerie folklore, the informaion regarding this subject, while plentiful, often contradicts itself (which is characteristic of anything regarding the Faerie world-See A Note on the Classification of Faeries). Some sense of the subject is attempted to be made here.

To the Celts and many other peoples of the old world, certain trees held special significance as a fuel for heat, cooking, building materials and weaponry. In addition to this however, many woods also provided a powerful spiritual presence. The specific trees varied between different cultures and geographic locations, but those believed to be "sacred" shared certain traits.

In the West, there seems to be this insidious tendency to make things unnecessarily complicated, almost on the basis that if it's more complicated, it is better. We have to take things and make them bigger and better; we have to add stuff. In Japan, of course, they seem to go in the opposite direction, paring things down to the bone, getting rid of any unnecessary frills and flounces, leaving us with the pure essence of a thing, simple and elegant. Think of Japanese garden design, flower arranging, the tea ceremony, and you will see what I mean.

Depending on whom you trained with, you may have been given quite a long list of 'situations where you should not use Reiki'. It seems that the only restriction that Mrs Takata taught was that you should not treat a broken bone with Reiki, but many other restrictions have been added in later on in Reiki's Western history. I thought I would spend a little time talking about these 'Reiki contraindications'.

Use it in protection rituals for mind and body (drink as a Tea), or sprinkle the Oil around the house to protect it. Use in purification and healing baths (place a handful in a mesh bag and attach it to the tap so the water will run through it).

Intelligent Energy?

It is well established within Reiki that the energy we channel is 'intelligent'. Some people believe that the energy is innately intelligent, perhaps because of its divine origins, and some believe that the intelligence of the energy is accounted for by the presence of spirit guides who direct the energy as we treat someone. Most of us will have noticed that the energy will move from where our hands are resting to other parts of the recipient's body, drawn according to the recipient's need to areas of need, so it is clear that it doesn't always go where we send it.

Nine Steps To Building A Crystal Grid - by Doreen Virtue

Adults and children need to get enough sleep to create the brain chemical serotonin. If enough serotonin isn’t produced the person wakes up feeling drowsy, hung-over, irritable, and hungry for refined carbohydrates (junk food). Low serotonin is also correlated with depression, PMS, and enuresis (bed-wetting). Some medical professionals are too quick to prescribe medications that boost serotonin, like Ritalyn and Prosac. Fortunately, there are natural ways to increase serotonin. Studies show that just 20 minutes of cardio exercise immediately increases serotonin. Also, getting outside, especially in sunshine, increases serotonin. Meditation also boosts serotonin.

One is the see, the beginning, when the life force is self compelled to move out to explore and confront newness. It is original and individualistic because it is un-influenced by previous experience. Because it does not know that things cannot be done, it proceeds with complete faith to do them. One is the pioneer, facing the unknown with an innocent courage. It draws upon its own creative well to solve any problems that arise.

In my article ‘Symbols and Beyond’ I spoke of the possibility of moving beyond the Reiki symbols to access the energy they represent directly, and the use of symbols from other cultures to direct the energy: Moslem prayers and Christian symbols for example. Here I want to talk about an exciting discovery for Reiki: you don’t have to be attuned to the symbols for them to work for you!

Care of Stones and Crystals

It is always a good idea to clean your stones and crystals when you first purchase them. Many stone and crystals absorb negative energy and can reflect it back. It is good to clean your stones often by either placing them in a heavy brine of pure salt and letting them remain there for 12 hours. Some softer stones can be cleared by letting them sit in the sun for a day.

Ginkgo

Ginkgo is an absolutely fascinating herb, magickally speaking. For one, it is the only tree on the planet that has survived basically unchanged since the dinosaur age. For another, it's not too much of a stretch to look at the leaf shape and see one half of the hemisphere of the human brain. Indeed, the ancients saw this correlation and as a result, the leaf has been used as a brain food for centuries, both in medicine and in magic. Lastly, it is a tree that can survive for 1,000 years or more, making it a true "Tree of Life."

The theatrical props of candle magic can be purchased at any department store and its rituals can be practiced in any sitting room or bedroom.

Numerology Series

In the ancient practice of numerology, a person's birth chart consists of four basic numbers. Three are drawn from the name given at birth and one from the birth date. Numerologists analyze these numbers to discover clues about the individual's character, destiny, and life cycles. A personal chart reading similar to those performed by professionals can be done by simply calculating these four numbers and checking the capsule descriptions on the following pages. Although people are the usual subjects, the process can be applied to anything that has a name and date of birth or origin; your cat, a business, a nation or even an idea.

A faery is a small, supernatural creature which dwells in a magickal place. Folklore faeries are usually human in form, but are known to disguise themselves well when the necessity arises. There is a wide variety of earth spirits, from elves and gnomes of the deep forest, to the pixies and faeries of flower gardens and meadow lands. Undines, nymphs and sprites are water creatures and sylphs are air spirits.

To prepare an elixir for amethyst start with a clean stone (soak in a heavy brine of sea salt for 12 hours or heavy concentration of tea for about the same time). Or you can put it in the sun for a day to cleanse and recharge it. I often do a combination of both is the weather is good. Place the clean stone in a sterilized glass bowl with 12 ounces of 90 proof pure drinking alcohol, or a very pure brandy.

Herbs form an integral part of the stock of many Witches, Wizards, Healers and the like. It is also no secret that the tools of your selected practice — whether it be your trade, a ritual or spell — should contain your own personal energy unless it is something that is obtained through you to be used by another. Even so, items still need to be cleansed and charged by the recipient, before they can make use of it.

Ginseng is ruled by Saturn and Uranus. The mystical and magickal lore goes back for thousands of years. Legend has it that these plants mysteriously rise from the ground at night, glowing, and flitting around the forest floor. The forked root of the plant also sometimes quite clearly resembles that of a human figure, giving rise to the aphrodisiac qualities associated with it. In fact, the most valuable roots of all are the few found with an appendage between the forked "legs" of the figure.

As a first step, we should do a physical cleansing of the object, careful to correct every tiny manufacturing defect we might find, as well as dirt or dust it could have. As we do this, we must visualise all the negative energy the object might have leaving it. Once it's free of these, we can move on to the next step, that is the consecration ritual.

Its golden brown to yellow color is classic but is confused with the less valuable citrine, which is sold under the name topaz.
The first thought when someone mentions taste of joburg is sore feet!! It all started about a month ago when my husband came beaming into the house saying that we are going to the taste of Joburg. “That’s nice” I replied until I learned that we will be one of the exhibitors and not a guest. He already signed the contract and paid and from now on the mad rush will start to get our selves ready for an estimated 20 000 people.

My journey in Wicca Written by Liz

2007 started off the same as any other year for me, promises to myself to loose weight and to explore spirituality, what turned out different though, is that I actually did start exploring my spirituality and it has lead me to Wiccan. I know it sounds corny, but I somehow feel whole now, even though I have not explored this as much as I need or want too, as yet.

A Banishing spell

Since we are busy with the waning moon it is a good time to do banishing spells. You can banish bad luck, bad habits, gossip, bad spirits or even dept. Remember do not do a spell on someone or for someone without their permission you can have the most pure intentions in the world but without asking it is rude and can later rune a friendship.

Tools and correspondences

There is a lot of people that absolutely believe you cannot do magick without and altar and at least some tools on your altar, I personally don’t have and altar. That is for various reasons 1. My family are devoted Christians and one might just be able to put two and two together (needles to say all hell would brake loose and pretty soon I will have a priest on my doorstep trying to safe my soul and have my wallet) 2. I have small children which doesn’t always listen when you say “Do not touch”. I don’t mind them touching but things brake and you have something of immense value to you, you don’t want it lying in pieces. 3. I have someone working in my house and I prefer that she does not touch my magickal equipment, not because I am being funny but all my things are charged and in tune with my vibrations, if someone else touch it, it takes a couple of days to get back into harmony. 4. Space. The room I spend most of my time in is my bedroom and the second one is the computer room. There is just not space in my room for an altar and the computer room is also a play room for the children (need I say more).

Magickal correspondence

Ok now that we know how to clean our space and how to protect ourselves we can get down to the fun stuff.

You will find that a lot of magickal workers have different ways to do things. You get ceremonial magick that requires you to do things in a specific order and all the magickal correspondences must be correct.

Then you get the more free spirited magickal workers that do a spell when their hearts tell them to do it and they will have as many correspondences as they please or as little. Let’s start with something most of you must have heard about and that is the phases of the moon. There is the basic four that I use in magick and you can change your spell just a little bit to correspond with the moon phases and have it work for you rather than against you.

I have read about the pentagram a couple of times before I decided to do it myself. It is a good idea to do this protection ritual before a spell and an even better idea to do it on a daily basis.

Protection

After cleansing one of the most important things to do is protection. You cast a circle to keep evil spirits out and to keep good energy in.

Your circle can also be a doorway to other realms; but casting one and protecting yourself is very important.

I like angels or the idea of angels. I haven’t been blessed yet by seeing one or hearing one but I had one fixing the bathroom light. The kiddies bathroom light decided it didn’t want to work anymore. So we change the light bulb but after the second new one it became clear that, that wasn’t the problem.

Origins Of Wicca

             Origin

The origin of Wicca is a disputed subject, discussions of which have lead to three prevailing theories. The first is that Gardner was taught a religion, based on pre-historic European matriarchal religions, by an unknown woman he simply referred to as "Dafo" or "old Dorothy". This person is assumed by most researchers to be Dorothy Clutterbuck, although several, including Philip Heselton have presented theories that they were two separate persons. In Wiccan Roots and Gerald Gardner and the Cauldron of Inspiration he contends that Gardner did not write the Wiccan rituals, but received then from an unknown source. He also wrote that most of the material used to "flesh out" Gardner's written work not only came from Aleister Crowley, but came from solely from his book, The Equinox vol 3 no. 1 or Blue Equinox. According to a partial estate listing, Gardner never owned a copy of this book, but had other books and even visited Crowley shortly before his death in 1947.

The Planetary Hours are an ancient system in which one of the seven traditional planets is given rulership over each day and various parts of the day. Monday is always the Day of the Moon. Tuesday is the day of Mars, Wednesday is ruled by Mercury, Thursday is Jupiter's day, Friday is the day of Venus, Saturday is the day of Saturn, and Sunday is the day of the Sun.

Whenever I think of a fortune teller, I think of a mysterious old woman sitting in a dark caravan somewhere in the middle of nowhere, a large crystal ball sitting on a small round table in the middle of the floor, dressed in unmistakably colourful gypsy garb, she quietly beckons you to sit down. That was until I met Morné, Morné would look equally at home in a modern boardroom with todays more untailored approach to business and, as is the case, doing a reading at Mawu Mysteoria.

A Basic Psychic Shield

What is a shield?

A psychic shield is a non material substance/force/power with which you surround yourself for protection. Many types of forces can be called into play in its construction, and many forms can be used, all at your discretion. It's important that a friend, instructor or adept (someone that has the skills) NOT do this work for you; your shield will be with you permanently, and you need to have the intimate connection that creating your own provides.

Yule is usually celebrated in coronation with the Christmas in the Northern Hemisphere. This celebration is also known as Winter Solstice, this is the longest night of the year. From this day on the day will start to increase in length and the lord of light is reborn of the Goddess.

This is a great time for a celebration to get rid of all the winter gloom knowing that autumn is on its way.

When I close my eyes and think of the moon it is always the full moon that fills my view. I can see the craters and hills; its silver light blessing everything it touches. It always makes me think of the vastness of the galaxy and the universe beyond that. There are many myths surrounding the full moon such as werewolves for example, yet when standing below the moon it feels forgiving and peaceful in her silver rays. The moon is know as lunar energy and is associated with the Goddess and represents seduction and a soft flowing energy.

On The Goddesses and the Gods

The religion of the Goddess has been called both polytheistic and monotheistic at the same time. The Goddess is polytheistic in that she has so many names and forms. She is also monotheistic in that the are all symbols of the single Great Mother, the Creator of All. Joseph Campbell, the historian and mythologist, calls this syncretism.

The Pentagram

The pentagram, or five-pointed star, may be the most misunderstood religious symbol around these days. Being the most common symbol of Neo-Pagan Witchcraft, it has nevertheless been denigrated by movie and publishing industries which seem 'hell-bent' on connecting it with Satanism and other malevolent practices. However, like the Roman Cross or Crucifix, it is only when the symbol is INVERTED that it alludes to negativity. And even then, there are exceptions, as we shall see.

Hecate is out to get me!!

We all practise magick and reap the rewards after all. But sometimes magick goes slightly off track and someone out there seems to have it in for you, for me that was Hecate! Even when the going gets tough, the rewards at the end are the best ever and are worth every bit of effort!!

Self Love is a Pre-Requisite to True Love

To honour yourself is to honour Lord and Lady, by first being happy with who we are as a person, and then by being part of a relationship as two happy whole individuals who compliment one another, we honour and please them.

Magic Ritual Spells, Do They Work?

The kind of magic that is performed in a ritual is done so with the use of spells. Though no one actually knows if it works.

Magicians who perform magic in this form usually make use of a memorized script with the appropriate spell, activity and motions that should be done. Those who practice the occult have claimed that performing this type of magic is a lot more similar to car driving. If the directions are followed appropriately, you could actually get to your destination and so the magic could work. But still, there is no one hundred percent guarantee.

The Secrets of Cinnamon

The first thing that comes to mind when I smell cinnamon is pancakes. Warm pancakes with the still melting cinnamon and sugar dripping out of them... Talk about calories! (but that is a conversation for another day).

To an herbalist however Cinnamon is one of the oldest spices there is. In ancient Egypt it was considered to be worth more than gold and was used in the mummification and embalming of the pharaohs. Imports of this spice began as early as 2000 BC from China to Egypt, that’s more than 4000 years ago.

The Waxing moon

Night time must be one of the most beautiful and magickal times of each cycle. The sky filled with stars and the beautiful round moon. According to tradition, the waxing moon phase starts as soon as the new moon is over and the moon starts to grow again, with such brightness that you can walk around in the middle of the night without bumping your toe, you have to smile at how complicated we have made modern life, we now need to use expensive computer equipment to find out in which phase the moon is, a sore toe is no longer good enough it seems.
